Is Capitalism dead?

Interesting opinions from a political expert/philosopher on current and future economic conditions with a focus on Capitalism.

I especially found statements near the end of the video assuring. Basically, the point was made that Scandinavian countries, while maintaining a high degree of social programs and a far more level income equality ratio among their citizens, they remain among the top countries in global economic competitiveness. In other words, the old argument that conservatives like to use for attacking all forms of  income re-distribution is a crock.

There is no reason why the wealth of a country cannot be more evenly shared while the nation remains vital in a global, competitive economy. You don't run out of "other people's money" because not everyone gets "on the dole" just because they can. People are just as anxious to invent, discover, and create jobs even if they won't earn the obscene amounts that their American counterparts do. I use the word "obscene" not because I begrudge anyone the fruits of their labour, but only because that wealth comes at the expense of large numbers of hard-working or even non-working folks who struggle for food and shelter every day.

Where have manners, class, decorum, sensitivity and humilty gone?

I came across the following, which is (supposed to have been) the keynote address at a meeting of the World Economic Forum. It was (partially) delivered by Manka Bros. Studios Chairman and CEO Khan Manka, Jr.

Having been out of corporate life for the past 10 years or so, the last five or so of which I watched in sadness and indeed horror, at the descent into insanity of management at all levels and also of the grunts they chose to wallow with in the muck that has become typical business behaviour.

This is what now passes for a keynote speech by a "captain of industry" at an international business conference.

I entered the CAA (Canadian Auto Club) contest for the greenest driver with this entry:

Hi. I’m Vinny’s car. Yeah, that’s me in the photo--the one who’s red with anger. Back in the good, old days, Vinny and I were pretty racy, going between traffic lights like jack rabbits. Boy, that was fun. Now, he's so boring, driving all sensible-like. Says it saves gas and wear and tear on the brakes. Where’s the fun in that?

He used to take me out a lot more, too. Now, he works from home and we live across the street from a mall and I have to practically beg him to go anywhere. Even going out for drinks (of oil) has gone from every 3 months or so, to only twice a year, even though it’s less than 4,000 kilometres in between.

Vinny’s been very cold toward me lately, considering he hardly ever turns on my air conditioner. Last week, I replaced my droopy tires with nice, firm, new ones and he didn’t even notice! Sure, he’s getting on in years, but my odometer is barely over 100,000 Kms. One of these days, Vinny will come outside and he might just see a “For Sale” sign on this gal.

It seems it wasn't good enough for even an honourable mention. The first place prize of an all-expense paid eco-trip for two to Costa Rica was awarded to (surprise, surprise) a couple who have been CAA members for 28 years. Okaaaaaay. I'm just kidding--I'm not the least bit upset. I wish the lucky winners a great trip and all the best.

This just in...

Perhaps you've heard: President Bush thinks that "Wall Street got drunk."

After asking guests at a private fund-raiser to turn their cameras off (clearly, at least one person didn't), Bush continued: "It got drunk, and now it's got a hangover. The question is: How long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments?"

With brilliant economic acumen like that controlling the American purse strings, it's a miracle the country hasn't completely imploded. I hope for everyone's sake it doesn't sink much further before the next inauguration takes place and a more advanced form of primate takes office.
